Location Location Location....
One of my favorite things about photography is location scouting. I'm constantly pinning new locations every time I drive around town. While I have some favorite locations that I shoot at often, I have lots of locations saved for so many photography adventures, some even just odd ball spots off the side of a road, if you're adventurous enough to trust my wild thought process. I promise, it's worth it!
When picking a location it's important that I keep in mind who and what the location is for. I love to match my locations to my clients style, this help create more comfortable and genuine photos.
Living in Northwest Arkansas many of my locations include parks, creeks, and trails. It's not called the natural state for nothing. There are so many unique finds just within a short drive.
One of my favorite and immediate go-to locations is Tanyard Creek in Bella Vista, AR. This location just has so much to offer no matter what you're looking for in photos. There is beautiful rivers, bridges, trees, fields and a stunning waterfall when you get to the end of the trail. I have captured some amazing memories here, including a surprise proposal! (This was such a fun story that I will HAVE to write about in another post sometime).
Recently I discovered a new location when doing a senior session that I fell in love with immediately!
Mount Olive Farms in Gravette, AR. This is a pick your own flowers field. One thing I loved when photography here is it wasn't just a senior session, it was an experience. While we were walking around taking photos, Marcella got to pick and create her own bouquet! Not only did we leave with stunning photos but Marcella took home a beautiful farm fresh bouquet.
We stumbled across this location because Marcella told me that she really liked the idea of flowers, many of the locations that I'd shot at previously didn't really have the vision I wanted for her session. So I asked a photography group (my go to is other local photographers, they're amazing!) and I got so many suggestions on flower fields in our area.
Sometimes though my locations come from clients and they'll take me somewhere I've never been before. This is always some of my favorite shoots, not only because the individual/s i'm shooting are comfortable, but also because it brings a new challenge for me to shoot in a brand new location, plus I got to discover something new!
While I have my favorite locations, I also have my least favorites. And sometimes my least favorite locations are requested often. For example Crystal Bridges. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love Crystal Bridges, I just do not enjoy the editing that comes afterwards. Since Crystal Bridges is a public museum it means there are loads of people the majority of the time you go, and it can be difficult to shoot around other people or to just take the hit and edit the crowds out later. This all being said I have gotten some beautiful photos at Crystal Bridges and have always loved my sessions there.
Location can be one of the most important part of booking a photo session, but remember if you book a good photographer they can make a dumpster look like a top tier location, I've seen it done! Who wants to give it a shot?
Next on the blog... Timing, when should you book your photoshoot. Golden hour explained.
